What is collagen replacement used for?
As we age, natural collagen, the primary support structure of our skin wears down—particularly along our expression lines. An injection of collagen can immediately smooth out these lines and wrinkles by raising depressions to the level of the surrounding skin.

What areas can be treated with collagen?
Collagen can temporarily correct frown lines, acne scars (except ice pick scars), vertical lip lines, lip outline, marionette lines, worry lines, crows feet and smile lines.

Where does this collagen come from?
The replacement collagen is made from highly purified bovine collagen. Now, there is a new, culture FDA approved collagen, Cosmoderm, which is made from human tissue.

How long do the results last?
Just like natural collagen, injectable collagen eventually loses its form and wears down. You may need repeated injections two to four times per year to maintain improvement in your skin.

How much collagen is injected each time?
The amount of collagen required for a full correction depends on your age, skin condition and amount of sun damage you have incurred.

Can anyone be treated with collagen?
No. After taking your medical history, your doctor will determine if you are a suitable candidate. Some people with severe allergic reactions may be precluded as well as those with a history of autoimmune disease.

What happens if I decide to have the treatment?
Before the actual collagen therapy can be done, two small tests must be performed on your forearms over a period of four weeks. If after that time you do not experience any redness, swelling or itching, you may schedule an appointment to have the procedure performed. Approximately two to three percent of the population will show a sensitivity to the test and cannot be treated with injectable bovine collagen. With Cosmoderm, no prior testing is necessary as no allergy has been reported with this human tissue derived collagen. For patients who have never had collagen treatment in the past, Cosmoderm would be the ideal collagen with which to initiate therapy.

Do the injections hurt?
The injections contains a small amount of lidocaine which helps numb the area temporarily. However, you may experience some discomfort, especially around the nose and lips.

What will I look like after the procedure?
Results of collagen replacement are immediate and most patients can resume their normal activities right afterward. It is possible, however, that you may experience temporary puffiness, tenderness or slight bruising at the injection sites which can be treated with ice and covered with make-up.
