What your dermatologists in Oceanside, Murrieta, San Marcos, Fallbrook, Solana Beach, Temecula and Menifee, California want you to know.
If you’ve been diagnosed with skin cancer, you may be confused with the many treatment options available. What’s the most effective treatment? Which treatment is easiest? Will I have a scar after treatment? The truth is there is one treatment that stands out above the rest. It’s called Mohs surgery.
Your dermatologists at Dermatology Specialists, Inc., want to share how Mohs surgery can help you. They have several convenient office locations in Oceanside, Murrieta, San Marcos, Fallbrook, Solana Beach, Temecula and Menifee, California to serve you.
Mohs micrographic surgery is a highly effective procedure used to treat common skin cancers including basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. During surgery, a thin layer of tissue is removed and examined under a microscope for cancerous cells. Layer-by-layer microscopic examination of your tissue is performed until all of the cancerous cells are removed.
There are many benefits of Mohs surgery when compared to conventional surgery. Consider that Mohs surgery is:
- Less invasive because only cancerous cell layers are removed, with less damage to surrounding tissue
- More comfortable because treatment usually requires only local anesthetic
- More convenient because Mohs surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, with no hospital stay
- More cosmetically beneficial because Mohs surgery leaves minimal scarring
Mohs surgery also has the highest cure rate of skin cancer surgery, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. Up to 99 percent of initial skin cancers are cured, and up to 94 percent of recurring skin cancers are cured.
Remember that early diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer is critical to a good outcome. Remember to pay attention to moles or skin discolorations that have changed shape, color, size or height. Changes in mole appearance could be an early sign of skin cancer. Remember to use a sunscreen of at least SPF 15 every day and at least SPF 30 if you are outdoors for a long period of time.
